Navratri and the Staircase to Evolution
Navrathri is a gentle reminder that we can shape our evolution from being mere mortals stuck in treadmills of pain and pleasures to experiencing divinity in human form here and now.
Since childhood, growing up in Mylapore, I have always been fascinated by the stairs we build during Navratri golu. The stairs have been of different kinds. And observing how they were made over time, tells us a slow story of India and its development. What has been timeless is the meaning of the stairs as a human endeavour to see what evolution could actually look like.
From the towering gods on top to the human bazaar in the middle and the playful zoo on the ground, meditating on golu is a poignant reminder of the fact that evolution and involution are happening right this moment and it is up to us to figure out, where we are and where we are headed.
Navrathri, of course, is not just about evolution and involution. It is a divine invocation of the feminine.
Thanks to the pandemic, we are in fascinating times where work has become far integrated with life that it is possible now for masculine energies to get more in touch with feminine energies and vice-versa.
And when humans discover this inner balance of energies, (the ardha-nari, as Shiva-parvati are called), perhaps, there is a glimmer of possibility that we do the work that is needed to restore masculine-feminine energies on planet Earth.
